Introduction

Preparation for a job interview is the most vital step in securing a job. Thorough preparation is essential in enabling an individual to be in control, calm, and confident during the interview. The most crucial step in preparation for an interview with an individual is to make sure they keep track of the various job applications. Printing off a copy of the selection criterion and their application will be an effective method of keeping track of the different job applications. Printing off a document of the selection criterion will guide an individual to the formal interview and the actual job they applied for. Prospective job applicants must rehearse the interview process and identify their strengths and weaknesses. Identification of strengths and weaknesses enables the applicants to deliver the right question to every question.

Company Research

According to an article by Greg Kratz in the Flex Times Jobs Blog, it is always important to research a company thoroughly before an interview. Researching a company before an interview starts with the internet but should go much deeper than the first page. Focus on the press coverage to know how much is out there concerning the company. Always do the news search about the company’s recent articles in the news press and business blogs. Researching for a company’s recent articles will give you know-how about how the business presents itself to the outer world.

Additionally, visit the company’s website to check the staff’s bio to know who will be interviewing you. The company’s website will help you familiarize yourself with the company’s solutions, themes, and how they present and market themselves, therefore allowing you familiarize yourself with the company’s culture. To add your information about a company, browse through their social media and corporate blog. (Kratz, 2021)

The essential information you should know about a company includes: what the company does, what is the company mission and vision, the company’s culture, learn who is running the show, the corporate executives and the board, the company’s finances, and their competitors. Checking about the company’s performance for the last three quarters and going through the company’s printed financial statements shows you are not there for the job only, but you also care about the big picture. Knowing the company’s competitors will help you familiarize yourself with the company’s market segment. Researching about a company before an interview shows how interested an individual is fit for the job.

Appropriate Attire for an Interview

According to Lisa McQuerrey in her article “What is the importance of appearance in a job interview,” she implies that no matter how good your papers are, you do not dress right for an interview, wrong impression to the interviewer.  The interviewer will mean that you neither respect yourself nor the interviewers. Dressing appropriately for an interview talks more about you, judgment, professionalism, confidence, and respect. Your outward appearance in an interview talks much about your judgment skills. The overall external appearance tells the interviewer if you are flaunting the standards, whether you care or don’t know what is expected of you. In addition, even if you want to be gauged by your talents and skills and not by how you dress in the workplace, you have to dress appropriately to show you respect the professional standards and norms in the workplace.

Furthermore, dressing decently boosts your self-confidence as it puts your mind in a work-frame. Even if it is for a telephone interview, it is recommended to dress appropriately as it helps keep your mind frame in a working environment (“The Importance of Dressing Well for a Job Interview – BACT Training,” 2018). Additionally, dressing well for an interview shows you respect the corporate culture, and you are that person who will fit in easily. More so, it implies you respect the interviewer’s time, and you are genuinely interested in the position. Finally, before choosing the attire to wear to an interview, research the company’s culture and determine the company culture’s dressing code. Whether the dressing code is formal, semi-casual, or casual, always wear your best in an interview. Wear nice fitting clothes, polished shoes, and have your hair and facial hair groomed. Remember to have your outfit the same or better than the company dressing culture or more so than your interviewer. (McQuerrey, 2018).

Anticipated Questions in an Interview

The key is always to understand the objective of the interview and the interview fits into the hiring process. Understanding this will help you know what the interviewer is aiming for and what kind of information they are looking for in a candidate (Linsberg, 2020). Not all job interviews are the same as they have sets of variables, for example, the interviewer and the candidate’s personalities, the corporate culture, and what position they are hiring for. Knowing what to ask and answer in advance is quite an advantage as you will be answering the interviewer questions effortlessly.

There are five questions that the interviewers are sure to ask you in any interview you may go. However, the structure of the questions may vary from time to time depending on the type of interview and how the interviewer may phrase the question. However, how the interviewer will ask the questions, he/she will want to know your answers to these below questions:

  • What are your expectations and ambitions? Do the candidate’s goals and targets match with the company’s plans for the position?
  • Does the candidate have the right work ethic or attitude about the job?
  • Does the candidate understand the company’s culture, its mission, and objectives, and if at all interested?
  • What are the candidate’s personality and work habits? Is his/her personality and work habit a good fit for the company?
  • What are the technical expertise, educational background, and field experience of the candidate? Does the candidate meet the required standards for the position?
