Communication Material Analysis

An important part of public health work is examining available information, identifying what is most important for your purpose, and communicating that to your target audience in a way that makes sense to them. Often you want to do more than share information; you want to change the way people think or motivate them to act. How you communicate depends on who you are trying to reach and what you want your message to accomplish. In this course, will create either an infographic or an op-ed/commentary. However, all the communication materials are important. Therefore, we will first ask you to analyze some examples of those communication types.

First you’ll read about the basic components of each, as well as an overview of the policy process. In public health, we often have to weigh competing (but valid) viewpoints and make difficult decisions. As you research and participate in your debate and write your op-ed and policy memo, you’ll be doing some of those things. For now, try to think about how the things you’re reading fit into that process, and how effective they are.

For the main part of the assignment, you’ll answer questions about the purpose and the effectiveness of three examples, and then use a rubric to grade those three. The process of grading someone else’s work should help you think critically about specific aspects of each communication type and understand what your work will be evaluated on. It will also give you the opportunity to suggest changes to the rubric before your work on your assignment.

Title

Child Malnutrition in the Philippines by Krizel Sagun Meeting the health challenges of displaced populations from Ukraine COVID-19 Pandemic-Era Nutrition Assistance: Impact and Sustainability
Who is the target audience? The target is Philippine citizens. The article informs everyone interested in the impact of war on Ukraine. However, the primary target is the countries receiving refugees from Ukraine (Ioffe et al., 2022). The targeted audience is members of the general public interested in the impact and sustainability of COVID-19, focusing on nutrition (Caspi et al., 2022).
What is the purpose? (Or what is it trying to communicate?) The infographic communicates the impact of child malnutrition in the Philippines (Drexel University, 2020). It informs the audience that malnutrition has a significant impact leading to the death of 95 Philippine children every day ·         The primary purpose is to inform the public about the impact of war on Ukraine citizens.

·         The author also tries to call people into action for an immediate cessation of violence by the Russian Government and urge European countries to adopt evidence-based practice while responding to the health needs of refugees.

·         The purpose is to inform the public about the impact of COVID-19 on nutrition.\

·         Requesting for extension of temporary relief until policymakers can determine the changes that should be made permanent.

·         Proposed strategies that can help curb the issue.

Is it effective?

The communication method is effective.

The article effectively contains important information that can benefit the targeted population. The approach is effective.

What does it do well?

·         The student indicated the heading of the infographic and ensured it was visible.

·         The heading is in bold, attracting the attention of the audience.

·         The figures give clearly show the impact of child malnutrition in the country.

·         The student provided sources for all the information included in the infographic.

·         The article provides accurate figures to help explain the effect of the war on Ukraine’s inhabitants.

·         The authors show how some world organization is doing their best to help the refugees.

·         Additionally, it shows how most countries have offered support to refugees.

·         The authors encourage people from different parts of the world to help fight against violence in Ukraine by the Russian Government.

·         The authors use accurate figures to explain the impact of COVID-19 on nutrition.

·         The author elaborates on the strategies to help curb food insufficiency during the pandemic.

·         The information is planned in a manner that can be easily understood by anyone reading.

·         There is a free flow of ideas supported by evidence from reliable sources.

What does it do badly? (e.g., errors, misleading facts, confusing, poor explanations, mislabeled figures) ·         The student should have used brighter colours to attract more attention.

·         It would be more effective if the student included pictures of children suffering from malnutrition.

·         From my perspective, the authors have not made any errors or presented misleading information at any point in the paper. From my perspective, the authors have not made any errors or presented misleading information at any point in the paper.

How would you improve it?

·         I would add pictures of Philippine children suffering from malnutrition to show the audience that the problem exists in the country.

·         I would use brighter colours to attract the attention of many audiences. Some people decide to read the information when attracted by more brilliant colours.

·         I would improve the paper by proposing one approach I feel reception countries should use to provide basic health needs to the displaced population. Doing so gives those countries a plan they only need to implement. The author handled all aspects correctly. However, I would have added a paragraph where I encourage members of the society to share the little food they have with others who lack it until the Government can find a solution to food insecurity caused by the pandemic.
How consistent is it with the reading (guidelines or ethical storytelling)? The infographic is consistent with the readings. The student observed ethical storytelling and used non-offensive language while addressing the issue. The article is consistent with the readings. The language used and approach utilized has observed all the required ethical procedures. Additionally, the article is academically proven, meaning professional bodies have analyzed it before posting. The article is consistent with the readings.
