The main source of this anxiety and panic attacks is the memory of the torture his parents went through before succumbing to death. However, this situation has further deteriorated within the past six months and this has translated into him having nightmares and painful flashbacks of his childhood. Subsequently, this has resulted in a poor sleeping routine for him during this period. Additionally, his sense of concentration and focus has reduced leading to poor grades, he has lost connection with a majority of his friends. This paper will exhaustively evaluate Imani’s case and discuss how Freud’s psychoanalytic theory can be employed in counseling Imani.
Counseling Strategies and Intervention Strategies
The goal of this counseling strategy is to instigate a significant change in Imani’s perspective of life. The success of this counseling strategy will be personified by an increase in concentration in school and an improvement in Imani’s grades. Furthermore, this counseling strategy will assist Imani in coming to terms with his anxiety and panic issues and allow him to recognize that he has encouraged his mind to relive the traumas of his childhood in his everyday adult life. (Doidge, 1997) asserts that the evidence for the effectiveness of the psychoanalytic theory in such cases is equivocal.
By guiding Imani through an in-depth analysis of his unresolved conflicts, he will become more self-aware of his unconscious thought patterns whilst having an improved comprehension of his beliefs, feelings, and thoughts concerning his traumatic experiences as a child. The major intervention strategy that may be used to achieve this is the implementation of the “talking cure” (Freud, 1911). In Imani’s case, he has suffered from prolonged mental torture since he has not had the proper opportunity to sit down and extensively talk to someone about how he feels, what he went through and how it affects him in his everyday life.
With reference to the Freudian model, symptoms of anxiety and panic reflect conflicts in the unconscious mind. The main agenda of this treatment plan will be to resolve these conflicts via a very intensive process. The entire treatment plan will take 3 months with three therapy sessions per week. Additionally, each therapy session will take I hour and 45 minutes. The counselor plays a very critical role in the treatment plan. Their main roles will be to aid Imani in addressing his issues in a positive manner, helping him explore available options that will potentially result in a better future, and aiding in the development of strategies that will enable Imani to increase his self-awareness. With reference to the experiences, patients undergo different experiences throughout the treatment process. Due to this, each step of treatment contains a clear explanation of the experience the patient will go through.
Step I: Treatment of Acute Anxiety and Panic
In this first step, the major role of the therapist will be to majorly focus on offering a thorough and comprehensive explanation of the unconscious and conscious definition of panic symptoms. The initial analysis and early treatment will encompass exploring the situation that Imani is currently in, his life events, and the content of his nightmares and panic episodes. (Shear & Cooper, 1993) affirms that “individual patients attribute unique significance to their symptoms, and that they also experience a variety of unconscious and conscious emotions in addition to anxiety during the panic.” Additionally, the counselor has the role of gathering this information. The therapist will then have sufficient grounds to recognize the unconscious conflicts which cause the panic attacks. The expected experience the patient will experience in this first step of treatment will be some form of relief from panic attacks and nightmares. This first phase of treatment will take 4 weeks.
Step II: Treatment of Panic and Anxiety Vulnerability
During this second step of treatment, the rudimentary dynamics related to anxiety and panic and which are related to the patient’s unconscious mind are comprehended and the therapist attempts to alter them. in Imani’s case, these conflicts may be as a result of separation from his family and the memory of the death of his parents. During this step, the therapist attempts to directly address the severe implications associated with independence and separation of the patient. This process will allow Imani to directly relive his conflicts in the presence of his therapist. This is done so as to ensure that any underlying issues and fantasies are comprehended, articulated, and rendered less frightening. “There is often a re-experiencing of central separation and anger themes in the transference, sometimes with a temporary recrudescence of symptoms and termination approaches” (Busch & Cooper et al., 1991). After this last treatment phase, Imani is expected to experience a greater capability in managing his emotions and having a significant increase in his concentration span. This last phase of treatment will last for three weeks.
Social and Cultural Needs of the Client
