Considering Imani’s case study, from the perspective of Freud’s Psychoanalytic theory, therapy is a prerequisite for him. In his theory, Sigmund Freud accentuated the fundamentality of the unconscious mind. His rudimentary postulation is that the unconscious mind directs behavior to a greater extent than how we would perceive it (Loewald, 1970). The main goal of this theory is to make the unconscious conscious. With reference to Imani’s case, he is affected by numerous stressors. He is a refugee with roots in East Africa and has severe issues related to anxiety and fear. He reports having frequent panic attacks for approximately 10 years. The main source of this anxiety and panic attacks is the memory of the torture his parents went through before succumbing to death. However, this situation has further deteriorated within the past six months and this has translated into him having nightmares and painful flashbacks of his childhood. Subsequently, this has resulted in a poor sleeping routine for him during this period. Additionally, his sense of concentration and focus has reduced leading to poor grades, he has lost connection with a majority of his friends. This paper will exhaustively evaluate Imani’s case and discuss how Freud’s psychoanalytic theory can be employed in counseling Imani.

Counseling Strategies and Intervention Strategies

The goal of this counseling strategy is to instigate a significant change in Imani’s perspective of life. The success of this counseling strategy will be personified by an increase in concentration in school and an improvement in Imani’s grades. Furthermore, this counseling strategy will assist Imani in coming to terms with his anxiety and panic issues and allow him to recognize that he has encouraged his mind to relive the traumas of his childhood in his everyday adult life. (Doidge, 1997) asserts that the evidence for the effectiveness of the psychoanalytic theory in such cases is equivocal.

By guiding Imani through an in-depth analysis of his unresolved conflicts, he will become more self-aware of his unconscious thought patterns whilst having an improved comprehension of his beliefs, feelings, and thoughts concerning his traumatic experiences as a child. The major intervention strategy that may be used to achieve this is the implementation of the “talking cure” (Freud, 1911). In Imani’s case, he has suffered from prolonged mental torture since he has not had the proper opportunity to sit down and extensively talk to someone about how he feels, what he went through and how it affects him in his everyday life.

Treatment Plan

With reference to the Freudian model, symptoms of anxiety and panic reflect conflicts in the unconscious mind. The main agenda of this treatment plan will be to resolve these conflicts via a very intensive process. The entire treatment plan will take 3 months with three therapy sessions per week. Additionally, each therapy session will take I hour and 45 minutes. The counselor plays a very critical role in the treatment plan. Their main roles will be to aid Imani in addressing his issues in a positive manner, helping him explore available options that will potentially result in a better future, and aiding in the development of strategies that will enable Imani to increase his self-awareness. Within each of the treatment phases, the role that the counselor plays is lucidly elucidated. With reference to the experiences, patients undergo different experiences throughout the treatment process. Due to this, each step of treatment contains a clear explanation of the experience the patient will go through.

Step I: Treatment of Acute Anxiety and Panic

In this first step, the major role of the therapist will be to majorly focus on offering a thorough and comprehensive explanation of the unconscious and conscious definition of panic symptoms. The initial analysis and early treatment will encompass exploring the situation that Imani is currently in, his life events, and the content of his nightmares and panic episodes. (Shear & Cooper, 1993) affirms that “individual patients attribute unique significance to their symptoms, and that they also experience a variety of unconscious and conscious emotions in addition to anxiety during the panic.” Additionally, the counselor has the role of gathering this information. The therapist will then have sufficient grounds to recognize the unconscious conflicts which cause the panic attacks. The expected experience the patient will experience in this first step of treatment will be some form of relief from panic attacks and nightmares. This first phase of treatment will take 4 weeks.

Step II: Treatment of Panic and Anxiety Vulnerability

During this second step of treatment, the rudimentary dynamics related to anxiety and panic and which are related to the patient’s unconscious mind are comprehended and the therapist attempts to alter them. in Imani’s case, these conflicts may be as a result of separation from his family and the memory of the death of his parents. Dynamisms within the patient are identified and this is usually a result of their emergence in the transference. The major task that the therapist will have in this step is to address the nature of this transference and work towards helping the patient learn how to handle it. Within this period, Imani is expected to have experienced improved relationships with his friends, have a less conflicted experience and memory of death and separation and undergo fewer recurrences of panic. This second phase will take 5 weeks.

Step III: Termination

During this step, the therapist attempts to directly address the severe implications associated with independence and separation of the patient. This process will allow Imani to directly relive his conflicts in the presence of his therapist. This is done so as to ensure that any underlying issues and fantasies are comprehended, articulated, and rendered less frightening. “There is often a re-experiencing of central separation and anger themes in the transference, sometimes with a temporary recrudescence of symptoms and termination approaches” (Busch & Cooper et al., 1991). After this last treatment phase, Imani is expected to experience a greater capability in managing his emotions and having a significant increase in his concentration span. This last phase of treatment will last for three weeks.

Social and Cultural Needs of the Client

Freud comprehended the concept of culture as an expression of the desires in the conflict between an individual and the society in which they live. Imani being a refugee from East Africa. Freud’s psychoanalytic theory addresses Imani’s culture by understanding the correlation that exists between Imani’s cultural collective psyche and his individual psyche. Additionally, the theory attempts to explain the unconscious dynamics of Imani’s individual constituents and his cultural collective psyche.

Valuable Insights

In coming to comprehend Imani’s unconscious world, one of the most important insights is that the “process of handling an unconscious conflict involves repetition of specific interpretations in different contexts as they apply to different manifestations of the same intrapsychic phenomenon” (e & Busch et al., (1997). Despite the fact that time is limited during psychotherapy, helping a patient to work through their past experiences is very important. this is especially the case because some patients may find it challenging to put their emotions into words during the first few sessions of therapy. With reference to Imani’s case, he only has been allocated three months to tackle his internal conflicts. For someone who has been struggling with unconscious conflicts for 10 years, three months may be a very limited time frame for therapy. However, if the counselor maximizes this time, it is very possible for them to help Imani to walk through the challenges he is facing. His treatment is more of quality therapy than the quantity of time allocated.

Implementation of Freudian Processes In Counselling

A counselor can implement Freudian processes in counseling without affecting the client by attempting to understand and bring to light the unconscious conflicts within a patient. This can be done by conducting a comprehensive psychiatric analysis of the patient while paying critical attention to their history of panic and anxiety attacks, past experiences of patients, and the feelings and emotions surrounding these attacks. It is important to note that most of the conflicts in a patient’s unconscious mind are embodied by detrimental effects such as nightmares, fallacies, panic attacks, and elevated levels of anxiety. A counselor may employ Freudian processes in Counselling to effectively tackle the symptoms and challenges presented by patients. With reference to Imani’s case, the Freudian process can be implemented by keenly and comprehensively focusing on the unconscious conflicts that Imani is going through and coming up with an appropriate psychoanalytic treatment plan.

In conclusion, this paper has outlined relevant elements of the underpinnings of Freud’s psychoanalytic theory and has comprehensively employed these elements in addressing a therapeutic case. With reference to Imani’s case, Freud’s psychoanalytical theory proved to be the best method of therapy. This is because this theory emphasizes the importance of the unconscious mind. The severity of the trauma Imani has gone through is a result of immense unconscious conflicts. However, through counseling using this psychoanalytic theory, Imani can be assisted in working through these traumas and living his life in a more peaceful and gratifying manner.
